[ about ]

The source audio for this collection is a binaural minidisc recording of a music box at my mom's house in December 2002. My only participation in producing the original audio was turning the crank to wind the machine up again once it had wound down (which provided much of the source material for Track 2).

Audio was fed into the computer and treated with a variety of indeterminate methods. The processing (fragmentation, inversion, alteration of speed, pitch, and bit rate) focused on highlighting qualities contained within the sounds rather than on modifying the signals with effects. The resulting audio files were mixed down in Pro Tools.

Low-volume playback is recommended; I'm very happy about how the sound seems to emerge and vanish almost imperceptibly at times, fading into and out of the ambience of the listening space.

[ music box hero ]

A four-part suite extrapolated entirely from a binaural recording of a music box. 30 seconds of audio samples harvested as a 17-minute work. Original melody and timbres recapitulated as sprinkled scrambles, angular distortions, frozen fossils, and shimmering disappearance.
