UMBRELLA
short film
[ original score / foley ]

A short film by Cat Tyc, Umbrella might be described as a magic realist meditation on reproductive freedom. The score is electronic, tense, edgy, and often abrasive, though it occasionally settles into mellifluous calm.

Bike music
For a scene featuring a bicycle chase, I recorded every sound I could coax from my bike and built rhythms from the resulting percussive samples. mp3 excerpt

Waiting room
A montage of suspended tones punctuated by glitchy hiccups (mp3 excerpt) during a scene of nervous waiting in a clinic reception area.

Foley
The protagonist of the film is followed by a man who incessantly taps on her with an umbrella. At her wit's end, she responds with a well-placed punch in the face (video excerpt). I created the sound effect of the punch, added some reverb to take it into a more ethereal space, and added some musical accents to score the still shots that follow.

Dream sequence
Here's an mp3 excerpt of the nightmarish soundscape I composed for a dream sequence (mp3 excerpt).

I recall the director at one point telling me to approach the score "less like a Foley artist and more like Sonic Youth".
