"CLEAN CUT" ON DUST

The little rogue Roomba just keeps on chuggin’! The comedy-horror short “Clean Cut”, directed by Andrew Hunt, featuring my sound design and original music as well as the work of a bunch of other cool kids like Ben Enke, Josh Stifter and Jeremy Wanek, is now available on DUST.

And what, one could be forgiven for asking, is DUST? Well, “DUST,” quoth DUST, “is the first multi-platform destination for binge watchable sci-fi. We feature science fiction short films and other content from emerging filmmakers with stunning visual effects, captivating plots and complex character explorations. Robots, aliens, space exploration, technology, and human experience are all a part of DUST.” So that’s what DUST is. OK?

SOVIET SLEEP EXPERIMENT: AUDIO POST ASSIST, FEATURE FILM

Recently I’ve been assisting with audio post on the feature film “The Soviet Sleep Experiment”. Directed by Barry Andersson, and featuring an ensemble cast that includes Chris Kattan, the film premieres this Friday 10/18, 5:10 PM at Twin Cities Film Festival. I engineered and edited some of the ADR, as well as filling in some Foley, sound effects editing, and atmospheric ambience for mixer Jonathan Siri Mohs. From the spreadsheet of requests from the dialog editor, I noticed that a lot of screaming and other loud/ harsh vocalizations were needed. So I set up a more easily “punished” dynamic mic in the booth alongside the usual boom, so I could flip back and forth between them as needed. Turned out to be a good plan. Looking forward to hearing how it all worked out in the mix.

Celebrating Minneapolis today.

This summer I wrote some music for a film by Felipe Mafasoli’s post-apocalyptic film “Nowhere Left to Run”— I’ve written about this music previously— and I decided to record some of it al fresco.

As folks around these parts know, you can often find a piano parked in some arbitrary location outdoors downtown when it’s warm out, so I figured it’d be fun to record on location. I take a portable recorder with me pretty much everywhere I go, so I plopped it down on top of the piano and went to town, accompanied by the soundscape of Nicollet Mall, letting it roll after I was done to let the city contribute some sound on its own.

It was an honor to perform on a piano emblazoned with the names of some local heroes. When I make music here, I bask in the shadow of The Trashmen, Julee Cruise, Hüsker Dü, Judy Garland, The Andrews Sisters, Tod Dockstader, and of course His Royal Badness himself.
