JUNIOR BIRDMAN AUDIO

JUNIOR BIRDMAN AUDIO AT THE 2020 MINNEAPOLIS INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

May 19, 2020  /  Mike Hallenbeck

As one might expect, the 2020 Minneapolis-St Paul International Film Festival has gone online in a streaming format This year. Which I’m happy to see, because it’s always been a fest where I’ve found some pleasing viewing. It’d be sad to see it succumb.

So I’m proud that my original music, sound edit and mix are available for your viewing and listening pleasure as part of the festival in support of Djinni Productions’ Happily Married After, directed by Alison Guessou.

Festure documentaries I’ve enjoyed include The Seer and the Unseen, about an Icelandic woman who campaigns to stop the construction of a road she believes will destroy the fossilized lava homes of elves in the area; I Am Not Alone, a profile of Armenian politician Nikol Pashinyan and his role in the 2018 non-violent Armenian revolution— excellent viewing for anyone with an interest in deposing a tyrant; and the somewhat self-explanatory Hip Hop in Ojibwe Country, which I thought was pretty great. I also enjoyed the short docs The Weapon You Choose, Bayt Jadeed: Seeking Home, and Narco Tumbas.

GRITSTONE VIDEO WINS GOLD AWARD AT FOURTEENERS COLORADO MARKETING AWARDS

May 13, 2020  /  Mike Hallenbeck

A fulfilling win the other night-- a video I sound edited and mixed won big at this year’s Fourteener Colorado Marketing Awards. The piece above won the Gold Award for Long-Form Video, and was nominated for Best in Show. Congrats to all involved!

The Gritstone Oncology T cell project was created by animation and design house Gravitation, under creative director Matt Faye. I worked with executive producer Glenn Kesner of the digital agency Equisolve to craft sound FX edit and mix with the right amount of whimsy and vintage sci-fi cheekiness to keep it fresh without undermining the seriousness of the subject. Given that the anatomical goings-on are portrayed as flat, hand-rendered paper shapes in motion, I deployed a variety of subtle shuffles and swipes. The occasional retro sci-fi visuals summoned sonar pings, synthy ambience and classic Star Trek-esque chirps and warbles. I made sure to tune many of the tonal library FX so they were in tune with the music. And this project also offered ample opportunity to harvest samples of the music itself as tonal SFX that blended with the musical score in a consonant, though barely noticeable way.

This promo aims to educate patients and cancer therapy professionals about Gritstone's pioneering T cell therapy Artificial Intelligence platform, Gritstone Edge. The objective was to both familiarize patients about T cell therapy, and introduce a promising new development that increases the efficacy of current T cell therapies. The challenge in communicating bio-science to a wide audience is always in keeping the story at a level that is complex enough to be authentic, and simple enough to be understood. The solution also has to be appealing in tone and visual design, a particular challenge on the subject of cancer and the realm of cellular biology. Secondary objectives included creating an animation that stood out amongst the crowd of 3D animated cellular animations.

THE BEAST: NEW FILM SOUNDTRACK RELEASED TODAY

May 07, 2020  /  Mike Hallenbeck

TheBeastCoverArt.jpg

Today I’m releasing a collection of soundtrack work compiled from my original music and sound design for “Nowhere Left to Run”-- a dreamlike, post-apocalyptic experimental film by Felipe Mafasoli. This collection reconstitutes the raw materials I generated and documented for the film, layering them into a new configuration for an experience facilitated exclusively by listening. Click on the link below to hear it.

HEAR “THE BEAST” HERE

The collection isn’t concerned with COVID-19 specifically-- I created the soundscape for the film in mid-2019. But the 2020 edit and mix process has proven serendipitously appropriate for a polarized interval of both stillness and frenzy, reflection and panic, of a simultaneous longing for the social and the solitary. Mafasoli requested a soundscape with an elegaic quality, a memorial to a world lost forever. I have no idea what anyone else will take away from this collection, but to me it sounds like memories preserved in amber, shot through with the glitches of operator error.

These tracks coalesce around two disparate elements: 1) iterations of a fragile melody evocative of a lost past, and 2) a shifting landscape sourced from analog synth overtones, glacially swept into horizons of reverb and shifted pitch. Mafasoli wanted the soundscape to include incidental sounds of what life used to be like pre-apocalypse, so it made sense to incorporate field recordingse of outdoor environments from my neighborhood years ago and from a city street downtown, where I documented my performance of the theme on a piano placed on the sidewalk for people to play in public (the recording also captures wind, passing vehicles, and snatches of overheard conversation).

Stream for free, purchase if you like. For May and June of 2020, all profits will benefit The Food Group, a Minnesota food shelf.

MORE WORK UNDER THE “ARCHIVE” MONIKER

I’ve put out several “musique plastique” releases under the name Archive over the years— more recently appended with my given name, given the number of other artists out there using the same nomenclature. Searching for previous releases is making me realize that some things have gone missing, and I’ll have to re-up them! But here are some tracks to give you a taste in the meantime:

Silent Night (Shepherds Quake) (Dark Winter)

That Will Be All (from the “Music in Black & White” release, Dark Winter)

Eventualities: Voice (extrapolated from vocal performances by Bryce Beverlin, Insides Music)

Eventualities 02: Guitar (extrapolated from guitar performances by Charles Gillet, from The Material (Insides Music)

Living Daylight Savings Time (Insides Music)
